Hey Buzz Crew,

It’s interesting to note that Redbox’s move to purchasing DVD’s upfront from distributors in order to avoid the studio-windows is exactly the opposite of what Netflix did in 2000. Netflix switched from upfront purchases through distributors to a revenue-sharing model with the major studios. The revenue sharing model allowed Netflix to grow its library cheaply and keep stock in highly-demanded movies, but the overall cost was higher with the revenue-share; furthermore, the studios have taken more of Netflix’s competitive advantage by implementing windowed releases in their current deals.

I think Redbox is making a great move, because over the rental life of a DVD this represents decreased revenues for the studios, so maybe they’ll start to move away from the windowed release.

Full disclosure: I own stock in Coinstar, Redbox’s parent company.

Love the show, and keep up the great work!

“”It’s large size is a pain to hold and you’d be better off if you have gorilla sized hands”" – Brian Tong (prize fight)

Am I talking about the Galaxy Note? Actually I am talking about the HTC HD2 when it came out. It was one of the first phones with a 4.3?” screen and I remember cnet making a little fun out of it even though today 4.3?” screens are the preferred size on android phones Now the Galaxy Note is coming and again cnet seems to have size issues from I have seen and read. In your podcast, please do not knock non-iPhone phones for delivering what Apple refuses to do, which is choice.

Hey buzzcrew,

You guys (and many others) have complained a lot about Android fragmentation over the past two or so years. However, I think the real problem lies not in the software, but with how people think of Android. That’s right – you’re thinking about it wrong! (RIP Steve.) Right now, people think about all phones running Android as Android phones. That sounds like it makes sense, but then people start to complain about Android phones being too different, phones not getting updates, etc. Instead, if people start calling Samsung phones running Android “”Samsung phones”", Motorola phones running Android “”Motorola phones”", and HTC phones running Android “”HTC phones”", the fragmentation will seem less existent. To me, the only “”Android phones”" are Nexus devices. This way, custom user interfaces seem less intrusive, because you’re not using a Google device, but rather an HTC, Samsung, or Motorola device. For example, whenever I look at an LG phone running Android, I would be infuriated if I thought of an Android phone ruined by LG’s custom skin. However, if I just think of it as an LG phone with Android just as the underlying software, I can accept it. I still won’t buy it, but I won’t be as angered if it never gets updated past Gingerbread, because it’s not actually an “”Android phone”". Doesn’t Android seem nicer now?

Hey Buzz Crew,

As a loyal AT&T customer for over 10 years and an iPhone owner for over 4 I was incensed when I began to be throttled in late February. Due to the success of Matt Spacarelli in small claims court, I began to plot my REVENGE!!! When I saw that my iPhone 4S had magically became a 4G phone overnight my bile began to rise and I was ready to add this to my list of complaints. But, lo and behold, my speeds have increased from a throttled .2 Mbps, to 2 Mbps on 3G, and now 8 Mbps! So, until I get throttled again later this month, AT&T can consider me a happy customer! Love the show.

The elephant in the room omission from the new iPad is the failure to incrementally increase the maximum amount of storage.

Does that relate to the flash memory crisis from the tsunami?

Does that relate to a technical/financial issue (reaching the end of Moore’s law)?

Is that an attempt to force iCloud on users?

Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs: First photos of actor portraying late Apple CEO

Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs: First photos of actor portraying late Apple CEO. Apple, Movies, Steve Jobs, Ashton Kutcher 0

Two and Half Men actor and the former Mr Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher has been photographed making his way to the set of his new film about the late Steve Jobs.

Not without controversy, both in terms of the subject matter as well as the casting of Kutcher, there’s no denying the 34-year-old actor bore more than a passing resemblance for the former Apple CEO, complete with black turtle neck jumper and trademark beard.?

Filming has only just begun in Los Angeles and is currently going under the working title of “Jobs: Get inspired.” The biopic is said to focus on Jobs’s “hippie years” in the lead up to his forming Apple. It’s pencilled in for a 2013 arrival.?

Kutcher’s portrayal of Steve Jobs is not the only film in the pipeline with Sony Pictures also working on a movie based on Walter Isaacson’s biography.?

In 1999 a film entitled Pirates of Silicon Valley”was also released, though of course back then the world had never heard of an iPod, let alone an iPhone or iPad.

Mitt’s Millions Move the Web

by Claudine Zap

News flash: Mitt Romney is way richer than you. How rich? A very cool — if incredibly maddening tool — can tell you exactly how long it takes for Richie Romney to make your salary (hint: not very long). Based on the presidential candidate’s 2010 tax return, the Slate calculator tells us: “Mitt Romney made $40,000 in 16 hours 10 minutes and 34 seconds.”

After facing growing criticism by his Republican competitors, and taking a drubbing in the South Carolina primary, the Republican candidate finally released his 2010 and 2011 tax returns. Voters were again reminded of the great divide between wealth and regular working stiffs: Romney earned about $21.6 million in 2010 and estimates about the same for 2011.

Mitt proved after releasing his tax information that his rate is, as he had estimated, “probably closer to the fifteen percent rate than anything.”

How is that possible? Easy: The very legal and very low capital gains tax. Romney, a former head of Bain Capital, has been living off investment profits, which unlike wages from a paycheck, are taxed at the lower 15 percent rate — instead of the 35 percent that wealthy Americans pay on earned income.
Mitt’s riches gave searches on the term “capital gains tax” a one-day jump of 50 percent, along with lookups on “what is capital gains tax,” “capital gains tax rate” and “history of capital gains tax.”

John Cassidy in the New Yorker points out that it was Bill Clinton who first cut the capital gains tax from 28 percent to 20 percent. George W. Bush slashed it down to 15 percent — where it remains today.

Maybe it’s not surprising that Romney was reluctant to release his tax statements. The New York Times reports that the Republican is the wealthiest candidate to ever run for president, with an estimated family fortune of $190 million to $250 million.

Forbes called Romney’s admission of his super-low tax rate a “teachable moment,” adding that keeping the investment income tax low allows for a “ginormous loophole” — tax shelters to convert fully taxed income into capital gains. “If you can transform $10 million of wages into gains, you can save over $2 million.”

However, as NPR reporter Tamara Keith pointed out in an analysis of the Newt Gingrich proposed tax plan, Romney would pay zero percent on taxes: The former House Speaker calls for a 15 percent flat tax that everyone could choose on earned income, and no tax on capital gains.

Much of Romney’s income comes from Bain, made through private equity deals, and is taxed at the lower capital gains rate. And even at the current rate of 15 percent, that sweet deal could be hard for ordinary taxpayers to swallow.

Huawei launches the Ascend Y 100 and the G 7105 exclusively with O2

Cheap as chips
Huawei launches the Ascend Y 100 and the G 7105 exclusively with O2. Phones, Huawei, Huawei Ascend Y 100, Huawei G 7105, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, O2 0

O2 will be the exclusive vendor for both the Huawei Ascend Y 100 and the Huawei G7105, as the manufacturer again caters for an entry-level audience.

While not of the same calibre as the excellent Huawei Ascend G300, the Ascend Y 100 is again an Android-powered smartphone running on Gingerbread 2.3. The handset sports a 2.8-inch touchscreen and there are both HSDPA and Wi-Fi for efficient browsing of the web.

Kitted out with a 2-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, Huawei was keen to accentuate the Ascend Y 100’s ability to shoot video at 30 frames per second, twice the speed of other phones at this price point, apparently.?

Talking of which, the Huawei Ascend Y 100 will be available from 1 June for ?79.99 on PAYG or free with a ?10 per month contract. Anyone who buys the phone before 31 August will also received a voucher for a free interchangeable back cover. This cover can either be designed by themselves or chosen from one of the ready-made designs.

The Huawei G 7105 as a back-to-basics feature phone offers very little in terms of functionality. Its focal point is the 2.8-inch LCD touchscreen while the camera is a simple 1.3-megapixel snapper with 4x digital zoom.

Though there’s no Wi-Fi connectivity, Opera Mini, which compresses websites for faster loading speeds, is on board, so hopefully you won’t be twiddling your thumbs for too long.?

In terms of battery life and we’re looking at 600 hours standby and 300 minutes talktime.?

Available now in white for ?39.99, a pink variant will also soon be available through selected O2 stores.

Although Huawei has predominantly focused on the lower-end of the mobile market, it will be launching its flagship device, the Huawei Ascned D quad later this year, which the manufacturer is calling the “world’s fastest smartphone”.

Martin Luther King Jr. Speeches Move the Web

by Claudine Zap

Martin Luther King Jr., the slain civil rights leader, is honored with a federal holiday on Monday, January 16. Along with working to integrate the country’s buses, schools, and lunch counters through nonviolent protest, the reverend inspired with his words.

Searches on his most well-known speech, “I Have a Dream,” have surged in the last week.

The speech certainly deserves the recognition it receives: The talk was delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington, and was considered a turning point in the civil rights movement.

The mesmerizing, repetitive “I Have a Dream” phrasing is recited in schools, echoed in churches, and quoted by politicians. It goes, in part, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Watch the “I Have a Dream” speech.

But King left behind a body of work — and possibly his second most popular speech: the legendary “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” has gained interest on the Web.  “Mountaintop” was delivered at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 3, 1968, the day before King was shot.

In a nod to the seminal work, Samuel L. Jackson recently took on the role of King in a Broadway play called “The Mountaintop,” which imagines King’s night before he died, after he has given the speech.

Many consider the words prophetic: “I’ve been to the mountaintop … I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land.”

Watch a clip of the speech here.

Mark Wahlberg’s Comments Spark Controversy

by Mike Krumboltz

Mark Wahlberg

In a recent interview with Men’s Journal, actor Mark Wahlberg made a remark about the 9/11 attacks that could spark a considerable controversy.

Wahlberg was originally scheduled to fly on one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center. Fortunately for him, he took a different flight a week earlier. When he spoke to Men’s Journal about what could have been, Wahlberg remarked, “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn?t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we?re going to land somewhere safely, don?t worry.’”

Wahlberg quickly apologized for the remark. According to gossip site TMZ, he said that his comments were ?irresponsible and that ?to speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention.?

Apologizing was a wise move. Wahlberg?s comment was quickly picked up by blogs and news organizations. NPR, the Washington Post, Us Weekly, and the Huffington Post have all covered the story. Lanford Beard of Entertainment Weekly writes, “Methinks a certain A-list action hero is getting a little too Method.”

Yahoo! News: 9/11 Remembered

TMZ spoke with Deena Burnett-Bailey, whose husband, Thomas Burnett, called her moments before the plane crashed into the tower.

Burnett-Bailey told TMZ: “Does Mark Wahlberg have a pilot’s license? Then I think hindsight is 20/20 and it’s insignificant to say what you would have done if you weren’t there. The plan for Flight 93 was foiled by heroes. For him to speculate that his presence on board could have stopped everything is silly and disrespectful. Sounds like someone is grandstanding.”

Wahlberg’s recent action film, “Contraband,” took in more than $28 million during its opening weekend.
